The Durability and Alure of Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is generally a multistep process, whereby machines equipped with diamond-segmented abrasives gradually grind down concrete surfaces to the desired degree of shine and smoothness.

The popularity of polishing concrete is on the increase since it is a flooring solution that lasts a lifetime and requires minimal maintenance. Architects and developers have also garnered a better understanding of the product, its virtues as well as the varying areas in which it can be utilised with great efficacy.

As previously mentioned, this flooring solution needs very little maintenance. Areas affected by high traffic such as commercial spaces will only need a re-seal buff every 4 or 5 years to restore the floor back to its original condition. This process is easy and causes minimal disruptions. While everyday cleaning can be done without effort using warm soapy water and a mop. For larger spaces a floor cleaner or a floor polisher can be used to speed things up.

For proper implementation, polished concrete needs a minimum slab requirement of 25 MPa (MPa- compressive strength concrete is measured in). If the desired strength cannot be achieved, an additional minimum of 50mm granolithic screed needs to be laid down or alternatively a surface hardener can be used to increase the hardness. The harder the concrete, the better it polishes up while also increasing durability, guaranteeing you a resilient product with longevity.
